St. John's and Va. Commonwealth Play To 0-0 Double-OT Tie, Red Storm Wins JMU Tourney Kristin Ru

HARRISONBURG, Va. - With a win over James Madison on Friday and a scoreless double-overtime tie with Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, the St. John’s women’s soccer team was named the tournament victor of the James Madison University/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Tournament. Senior Nicole Pasciolla, junior goalkeeper Kristin Russell and rookiesAmy Marron and Michelle Iannacchino were selected to the All-Tournament Team at the JMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Harrisonburg, Va.

St. John’s finished the tournament with four points, James Madison finished second in the tournament after a 1-0 victory over Villanova in the second game on Sunday. Goalie Diane Wszalek, Oliva Tornoff and Teresa Rynier were named to the All-Tournament roster. Katy Nagy, Candace Ruff and Eryn Ryan were selected for Villanova and Breina White and Bex Kunz for VCU.

Earlier in the day, St. John’s played Virginia Commonwealth to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the BIG EAST-Colonial Athletic Conference Sunday morning match up.

With the tie, St. John’s record moves to 1-2-1 and Virginia Commonwealth’s record evens at 1-1-1.

The scoreless 110-minute contest was evenly played as both St. John’s and VCU had 11 shots each. Russell (1-2-1) had three saves between the pipes for the Red Storm. Two of the three came in the first half. VCU’s Megan Lynch blanked four St. John’s attempts at a goal.

The Red Storm had one of its best chances to score in the second half when rookie Michelle Murino hit a shot from 45 yards out that reached Lynch in the net. Murino’s shot hit the cross bar and the tips of Lynch’s fingers as the ball bobbled away from the goal.
