No. 4 Virginia Escapes With 2-1 Win Against St. John's senior Kristin Russell marks 11 saves.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The St. John's women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into the 73rd minute, but the fourth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers evened the score, before notching the game-winner in the 86th minute for a 2-1 win at Klockner Stadium on Tuesday night.

"We produced a great team performance against one of the best team's in the country," remarked Red Storm head coach Ian Stone. "It is important that going forward into this weekend's New York City Classic, we keep our momentum. "

St. John's senior goalkeeper Kristin Russelltallied 10 saves through 90 minutes of a hard-fought battle, a re-match of the Red Storm's 2009 NCAA Tournament contest.

Scoreless through the first period, rookie Chelsey Martino, a forward from Framingham, Mass., gave the Red Storm (1-2-1) a spark as she scored four minutes into the second half. A second-half starter, Martino scored on a chip shot from 15 yards out as the ball slipped past Virginia goalkeeper, Chantel Jones to the far post. The goal was the first of Martino's collegiate career.

The game wore on as St. John's held on to its 1-0 lead through the 73rd minute of action. But after three-straight Cavalier corners, Virginia (4-0-0) tied it up with a rebounded header by sophomore forward Molly Menchel.

With the end of regulation looming, Virginia turned up the heat and fired six straight shots with 10 minutes to go. One went high and St. John's was able to stop four, but the sixth slipped past Russell off another rebounded. This time it was Gloria Douglas who got her foot on the ball in the 86th minute for the score.

With less than three minutes left, Martino got a final shot of for the Red Storm to try to tie it, but Chantel save the rookie's attempt.
