QUEENS, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference has selected 165 St. John's student-athletes to its 2011-12 All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office.

Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 16 member institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses. Nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee.

For the 2011-12 season, the Red Storm baseball team, the recipient of the 2011-12 BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award and NCAA Super Regional contender, led all St. John's teams with 24 honorees. The men's soccer team was a close second with 21, while the lacrosse team, also a recipient of the 2011-12 BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award, and the women's soccer team tied for third with 20 student-athletes honored. The 165 total was an increase of four from the 2010-11 list.

The honorees will be recognized and presented their certificates at a special halftime presentation of one of the men's basketball games at Madison Square Garden during the 2012-13 season.

There were 3,370 student-athletes from all of the 16 BIG EAST schools selected, an increase of 134 student-athletes from the 3,236 named for the 2010-11 season.
