Hoyas Defeat Red Storm, 2-1 With Overtime PK

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer came back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the 74th minute to take Georgetown to overtime, but the Hoyas scored on a penalty kick in the third minute of overtime for the 2-1 victory.

"Georgetown is probably going to be in the top 25 after the results this weekend, and we played right along with them," remarked head coach Ian Stone. "Sunday games in the BIG EAST are tough physical battles, you have to dig deep, you have to find a way to win. We proved we can compete with any of these teams; we just have to be prepared to compete. We have to be able to be consistent on the Friday and the Sunday. We have to get used to fighting and using the great depth that we have."

Despite most of the first period being played in Georgetown's offensive third, the Red Storm defense worked hard to protect its goal. The defensive unit of Michelle Iannachino, Patrice Casimir, Megan Klement and Kristina Quan held the Hoyas to three shots on goal as starting keeper Kristin Russellmade three saves. Iannachino playing left back, was able to kick away much of Georgetown's offensive threats as play stayed in that corner of the field.

St. John's (6-4-1, 2-2 BIG EAST) and Georgetown (9-3-0, 3-1 BIG EAST) went into their respective locker rooms tied 0-0.

In the second period, Georgetown broke the scoreless tie as Camille Trujillo scored off a free kick into the box. Samantha Baker took the free kick and Trujillo knocked it down in the box. Trujillo and Klement went one-on-one, but Trujillo just slid one by her and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Ferris, who replaced Russell in the second half. The goal gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.

It was McLaughlin's first-career goal as the first assist for Murino. Stefansdottir's assist was her third point of the weekend as she scored a goal on Friday evening.

St. John's and Georgetown continued to play back and forth for the rest of regulation.
