With the win the Red Storm's record improves to 5-4-4, 1-3-2 BIG EAST, while the Bulls drops to 7-4-3, 3-3-1 BIG EAST.

"The girls thoroughly deserved the victory today," head coach Ian Stone said. "The performance was most impressive coming off a tough loss to Marquette in double overtime on Friday. The win was a testament to how cohesive this squad is and how they came together to win."

Leaverton scored the only goal the Red Storm needed in the 45th minute. After Amanda Pasciolla was fouled, St. John's received a free kick from about 40 yards out. Courtney Lane kicked the ball to Amanda Santos in the box, who headed the ball to the right of the net. Leaverton came in and redirected the ball past the goalie for the score.

The goal was the second of the season for Leaverton, both of which have been game winners. Santos and Lane were each credited with assists, marking the second of the year for Santos and the first for Lane.

Russell played all 90 minutes in net and made one save in the contest. She was credited with the win, improving her record to 5-3-4 en route to her eighth shutout on the season, which ties Jaime Beran for No. 1 in the STJ single-season record books. STORY AD BEGINS HERE

The Red Storm pressured the Bulls throughout the entire contest and its defense was just as solid, limiting USF to only five shots in the game and one on net.

Ten different players registered a shot, as the team posted its first contest of the season with 20-plus shots and surpassed its previous season high of 15 shots against Princeton on Sept. 21. In addition to leading the Bulls in shots on goals, 10-1, STJ had six corners in the contest, while USF only had one.

The Red Storm never stopped pressuring and almost came close to scoring two other goals late in the contest. Kelly McConnell had an open look and fired a shot in the 74th minute, but USF goalie Mallori Lofton-Malachi made the stop. In the 82nd minute, Sarah McGrath broke away from a defender and was one-on-one with the keeper in the right side of the box. She kicked the ball hard, but Lofton-Malachi made the diving save. USF's Lofton-Malachi made eight saves in 90 minutes of action

St. John's will look to continue its wining ways when it hosts a pair of BIG EAST contests next weekend. The Red Storm will welcome Rutgers on Friday at 7 p.m. and then close out its home schedule on Sunday when it welcomes Seton Hall at 1 p.m. Sunday's game has also been designated as senior day, as Jacklyn James, Rebecca Capinera and Brittany Cavarra will be honored for their careers at St. John's.
