QUEENS, N.Y. - Amanda Pasciolla's golden goal in the 96th minute lifted the No. 15/23 St. John's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 16/25 Connecticut on Thursday night at Belson Stadium.
The victory against UConn is the third in history and the second in three years for the Red Storm, who improves to 8-1-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST this season. With the loss, the Huskies' record drops to 6-3-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST.
"Once again, I felt the team showed a lot of character in the game," coach Ian Stone said. "UConn is an excellent team and tonight's game showed that we can find a way to dig deep and grind out wins."
The Red Storm defensive unit fought off a strong Huskies' offense that outshot it 17-6 in the game. Despite UConn controlling the tempo, St. John's pressured late in the contest and created scoring chances in the second half, while its back line came away with key stops to keep the game scoreless.
St. John's used its momentum from the end of regulation to challenge in its offensive third in overtime. Nearly six minutes into extra time, Pasciolla had the ball and dribbled toward the goal. UConn goalie Jessica Dulski came out of the net to defend and Pasciolla took advantage of the opening, firing a shot high and over Dulski's head for the winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Russell had a big night in net for the Red Storm. She made seven saves on 17 shots faced and made numerous defensive stops by coming out of net to cut off UConn scoring attempts. Russell recorded the 15th shutout of her career, moving into sole possession of fourth place in the STJ all-time record books.
The Red Storm will look to continue its winning ways on Sunday when it travels to face Providence at noon.
