QUEENS, N.Y. - The NCAA released its final statistics for the 2008 women's soccer season and the St. John's women's soccer team, along with rookie goalkeeper Kristin Russell, are ranked among the best in the nation.

The Red Storm had a strong year defensively, setting the program record with 10 shutouts and a 0.593 goals against average. STJ's shutout percentage of 0.526 is the 26th best in the nation, while its goals against average in the 11th best. The highest ranking for the Red Storm is its save percentage of 0.883, which is the fourth-best among all Division I schools.

Russell made an immediate impact in her freshman season and was ranked throughout the season in numerous statistical categories listed by the NCAA. Not only did she set the Red Storm individual goalie record with 10 shutouts, she also capped the season ranked No. 3 in the nation with a 0.907 save percentage and had the fifth-best goals against average in Division I soccer with a 0.442 percentage. In the Red Storm season record books, she finished second in goals against average and seventh in save percentage. For her efforts, she garnered All-BIG EAST honorable mention honors.

On the year, St. John's advanced to its third-straight BIG EAST Tournament, finished with an 8-6-5, 4-4-3 BIG EAST slate, defeated a top 25 team with a 1-0 win over then-No. 15 Rutgers on Oct. 17, came away with a key tie over then-No. 11 West Virginia, 0-0, on Sept. 25 and head coach Ian Stone recorded his 10th winning season at the helm of the program.
