"I am very proud of the performance the girls produced," head coach Ian Stone said. "Rutgers over the past few years has been a difficult team for us to play against. They ended our season last year in a shootout in the BIG EAST Tournament, and that is obviously something that is fresh in a lot of people's minds. Beating a nationally ranked team is a great accomplishment, so I am really happy with how we performed and I am happy for the girls."

Defender Courtney Lane scored the only goal the team needed in the 55th minute. Sarah McGrath took the ball down the right side of the field and crossed to Lane, who was on the opposite side of the field. Lane faked a move and then took the shot, bending it to the left side past the diving goalie. The score was the first-career goal for Lane. McGrath was credited with the assist, which was the third of the season and the fourth of her career.

Rookie goalkeeper Kristin Russell was strong again in net for the Red Storm, cutting off crosses while making a save on the only shot on goal Rutgers had in the game. The shutout was the ninth of the season for Russell, who broke the recordJaime Beran set in 2006 with eight. St. John's also tied its own team record of nine shutouts, which had been achieved on three previous occasions.
