Russell Makes Mark In Record Book

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team will close out its home portion of the 2008 campaign when it hosts Rutgers and Seton Hall this weekend. The Red Storm and No. 15 Scarlet Knights will face off on Friday at 7 p.m., and STJ will host the Pirates on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• The St. John's-Seton Hall game is designated as Senior Day. Rebecca Capinera, Jacklyn James and Brittany Cavarrawill be honored prior to the start of the contest for their careers with the Red Storm.
• RedStormSports.com will stream this weekend's soccer action through StormTracker All-Access presented by Allstate. Both games will have a live video and audio broadcast, which will feature a three-camera setup, a scoreboard and advanced production capabilities. Fans can access the feature by going to RedStormSports.com, clicking on the All-Access button and signing up for the service. The All-Access subscription is $9.95 a month or $79.95 for the year. Fans can access Red Storm events by signing up for the service.
• The Red Storm will be looking to continue its winning ways after a 1-0 victory against USF on Oct. 12. The team enters the weekend with a 5-4-4, 1-3-2 BIG EAST record.
A Look At The Competition • St. John's will face Rutgers for the 13th time in history. The Scarlet Knights own the series record 8-1-3. The teams met twice last year. After Rutgers won the regular season contest, 1-0, the teams faced off in the BIG EAST Tournament and tied in two overtimes, but the Scarlet Knights advanced to the next round after winning the shootout. This season, Rutgers has been led by Caycie Gusman (eight goals) and senior Kristen Edmonds (three goals, five assists). Junior Gina DeMaio is second in the BIG EAST with 11 assists. Junior goalkeeper Erin Guthrie has allowed only seven goals in 14 games while recording 50 saves. The Scarlet Knights enter the match with a 10-3-1, 5-1-1 BIG EAST record and are ranked in multiple national polls, including Soccer America (No. 15), NSCAA/ adidas (No. 21), Soccer Times (No. 21), Soccerbuzz (No. 22) and Top Drawer Soccer (No. 28).
• The Red Storm and Pirates face each other for the 13th time in history. St. John's leads the series 7-4-1 and has won the last six meetings. Last year STJ shut out the Pirates, 2-0, in South Orange, N.J. Seton Hall enters the weekend with a 5-7-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST slate. The Pirates are coming off of two tough losses to Cincinnati, 2-0, and Louisville, 3-1, last weekend. Nicki Gross leads the way for SHU with 10 points, scoring four goals and posting two assists. Katie Andreski paces the team with four goals, while Taylor Wilson has a team-best four assists. Overall, eight different SHU players have scored a goal, while 11 players have tallied an assist.
Russell Makes Mark In Record Book • Freshman goalie Kristin Russell recorded her eighth shutout of the season against USF on Oct. 12 and tied Jaime Beranfor the No. 1 spot in the St. John's single season record books.
St. John's Ranked Among The Best • The St. John's defense has been strong this season allowing only eight goals while posting eight shutouts in 13 games. Through Oct. 12 games, the Red Storm has posted a .899 save percentage to rank sixth in the country. The team has also posted a 0.615 shutout percentage to rank 13th in the country, and its 0.570 goals against average is the 19th-best average among Division I programs.
Russell Making A Name For Herself • Russell is ranked No. 2 in the nation in save percentage and No. 7 in goals against average. Russell has only allowed four goals in 12 games this season, tallying a .336 goals against average and a save percentage of .935. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native has received three honors this year, as she was a two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honoree and was a TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week selection.
