"It was nice to get another shutout," head coach Ian Stone said. "I would give credit to all 19 players that saw action in the game. Our team identity is becoming one that works hard cohesively to protect our goal, which is evident in the five shutouts in six games."
With the win, St. John's improves to 4-1-1, while Quinnipiac drops to 2-2-0 on the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Russell had another strong performance in net, playing all 90 minutes and making five saves in as many chances. The shutout was the fifth of the season for Russell, who has played every minute of every game for the Red Storm.
C.J. Ludemann was the Red Storm's offensive leader, not only scoring the game-winning goal, but also leading the way with five shots and four on net.
After the teams went back and forth on the attack to open the game, St. John's took the lead in the 19th minute. Sarah McGrath had the ball and passed it to Ludemann, who was 30 yards out from the net. Ludemann took the pass and kicked the ball high, bending it at the last minute over keeper Jillian Kelley's head for the score. The goal was the first of the season for Ludemann and the assist was McGrath's second of the year.
Quinnipiac's best scoring opportunity of the game came in the 30th minute. With goalkeeper Russell playing up in the box, Furtuna Velaj fired a shot that was wide of Russell and on target for the net, but Tara Mendoza came in and kicked the ball away for the defensive save.
With the shots even, 6-6, in the first half, the Red Storm came out of the break and immediately went on the attack. St. John's had a strong offensive presence throughout most of the period, but Quinnipiac challenged late in the contest trying to knot the score and was stopped by the Red Storm defense to preserve the shutout.
